Mormon Tabernacle Choir bringing Broadway stars in for summer concert

Thursday , May 31, 2018 - 12:43 PM

SALT LAKE CITY — If your Pioneer Day traditions include the annual Mormon Tabernacle Choir concert, “Music for a Summer Evening,” or if you want to start it as a new tradition, it’s almost time to get your tickets.

The choir announced Thursday that this year’s concerts will be July 20 and 21 at the Conference Center and will feature Broadway stars Matthew Morrison and Laura Michelle Kelly along with the choir and Orchestra at Temple Square. Oscar “Andy” Hammerstein III, grandson of the famed Oscar Hammerstein II, will be the narrator.

Free tickets for the 8 p.m. concerts will be available beginning Tuesday, June 5, at 10 a.m. through lds.org/events or at 801-570-0080. There is a limit of four tickets per request and attendance is limited to those ages 8 and up.

Those without tickets may still be admitted after waiting in the standby line by the flagpole on Temple Square.

Morrison is best known for his role as Mr. Schuester in the musical comedy series “Glee.” He has also performed extensively on Broadway and has Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe nominations.

Kelly starred as Marry Poppins in London and in numerous other productions there and in New York and has won the Laurence Olivier Award.

The two performed together in the lead roles in a production of “Finding Neverland.”

Hammerstein is the family historian, a painter, writer and lecturer. He narrated the choir’s “Music: It Runs in the Family” RootsTech concert in 2017.

Morrison and Kelly will also appear on the July 22 “Music and the Spoken Word” broadcast, for which tickets are not required. That performance will be in the Conference Center at 9:30 a.m., but patrons must be seated by 9:15.

The concert will be live streamed on mormontabernaclechoir.org, the LDS Church satellite system and BYU Television at 8 p.m. on July 21.
