Prep tennis: Bonneville outlasts Park City for Region 11 title

Friday , May 04, 2018 - 7:40 PM

OGDEN — The last time Bonneville tennis player Brecken Benard faced Park City’s Alex Burkemper, the spoils went to the Miners. Burkemper attacked Benard’s backhand and stayed in rallies longer en route to a 6-3, 6-3 win.

Benard waited until Friday to exact his revenge and it was good timing as his 6-3, 6-0 win in the No. 2 singles championship match started a day where the Lakers pipped Park City for the Region 11 tennis title at Ogden High School.

“This time I was kind of pushing to his backhand, making him work more than he was making me work,” Benard said.

There were two matches later in the day that tied the bow on Bonneville’s championship. The first was Andrew McCall’s win at No. 3 singles.

McCall won the first set of his championship match, then got in trouble and dropped the second set. The frustration spilled over to the early portion of the third set, where his Park City opponent had numerous chances to widen the gap.

Instead, McCall figured things out, punctuating the final game and his victory with an ace out wide at 30-love to win 6-1, 5-7, 6-4.

Mitchell Holden and Cade Adams, the Lakers’ No. 3 doubles team, went to a third set with Park City as well.

They led 5-2 in the third set before the nerves set in and the Miners closed to 5-4, but the Bonneville team pulled out the win and essentially wrapped up the region title.

“I knew we needed to get one of those (two) matches, so when they both split we were kind of like ‘Ok, we need someone to step up,’” Bonneville head coach Katie Hall said. “And they both did.”

The Lakers and Miners, the two top teams in the region, faced off in four championship finals and one third-place match. Bonneville won each of those matches, with Benard and McCall winning in singles.

Rhett Kelton and Sam Hendrickson won in straight sets — 6-3, 6-4 — at No. 2 doubles for Bonneville before the majority of both teams went and watched the No. 3 doubles match.

Caden Heaton (Bonneville) and Spencer Kunkel (Park City), the two highest-rated No. 1 singles players coming into the tournament, both lost in surprising fashion Thursday. They faced off in the third-place match, which Heaton won 6-1, 6-3.
